Upcoming Event – ‘Overcoming second book syndrome’ with the ASA

Working on your second novel? I’m doing the following online presentation for the Australian Society of Authors and I’d love to see you there! Even if you can’t make the live session, you’ll receive a link to the recording after the event.

Date: Wednesday 11 December 2024

Time: 1:00-2:30pm AEDT

Cost: $50 Member Price, $100 for Non-Members

Event description:

Second book syndrome is renowned and widely feared for good reason; it can be a time of crippling self-doubt and anxiety, leading to serious creative blocks. If you’re unlucky it can even strike on book one, or on every creative project you embark upon! And it can be particularly perilous if you’re feeling the pressure to live up to the success of your previous publication.

Hayley Scrivenor knows this all too well. Dirt Town was published in 2022 and became a #1 Australian Bestseller, a USA TODAY Bestseller, and won several national and international awards. Hayley’s second novel, Girl Falling was released in August 2024 and became a bestseller all over again.

Don’t miss this session with Hayley to hear what she’s learned writing and publishing her second book, with a focus on self-compassion and attempting (!) to enjoy the process.

Hayley will cover:

  • Debunking the second novel blues
  • Self-compassion as a question of craft
  • Writing your own user’s guide
  • The ‘happy idiot’ approach
  • No writer is an island – on community and envy
  • There’s always therapy!

While specifically aimed at authors working on their second books, this session would also be relevant to anyone beginning or trying to make progress on a large-scale creative endeavour.

There will be time for questions.
