Book #22 for 2023 is another advance copy! I’m a sucker for an Appalachian setting (this year has already taken me there at least once, with Demon Copperhead, which I totally adored), and so I was keen when this book landed in my mail box. So many endorsements say some variation on ‘page-turner’, but this book I really genuinely read in one go, unable to stop once I’d started. Here’s what I sent back to the publisher:

I am thrilled to say that DIRT CREEK: A Novel (which is the U.S. edition of my first novel) has been shortlisted for the 2023 Lammy Award for LGBTQ+ Mystery! It is one of five finalists for the award in this category.

Book #21 for 2023 is a reread! All the Unloved by Susan McCreery is a tightly-packed novella that I loved returning to. In my endorsement for this book, I wrote:

Book #20 for 2023 was The Stoning by Peter Papathanasiou. Detective Sergeant Georgios ‘George’ Manolis comes to a small country community where violence, racism and misogny obscure and confuse what really happened in the case he’s been sent to investigate. ‘Gentle’ is definitely not a word I’d use in relation this story - its gritty menace reminded me forcefully of Wake in Fright (I haven’t read the book, but I saw the 1971 film projected onto a white sheet at a bush doof once, which I absolutely do not recommend, because good luck falling asleep in your tent that night).

Book #19 for 2023 was A Minor Chorus by Billy-Ray Belcourt, a writer from the Driftpile Cree Nation. I’ve always been a sucker for a novel that’s about someone trying to write a novel:

Book #18 for 2023 is Iris, by Fiona Kelly McGregor. I am absolutely not surprised this novel has made the longlist for the Stella this year. I was completely absorbed by this book, which beautifully illuminates some of the queer history of Sydney and brings noted crim, Iris Webber, to life. I was taken with the voice, and loved what McGregor did with POV. The best part? I’ll be in conversation with Fiona, along with Benjamin Stevens (author of Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone) for Gordon Library TOMORROW at 6.30pm.

I bought Mercedes Mercier's first book, White Noise, not long after it came out last year. I was lucky enough to receive the follow up to her debut as an ARC (Advance Reader Copy - which I often accidentally call an AdvanceD Reader Copy, perhaps because I like the idea of myself as an advanced reader??). Anyway, because I’m a completist, I returned to White Noise before reading Black Lies, to make them reads #16 and #17 for 2023, respectively! ⁠
